Escondido Falls: A Guide to Malibu's Waterfall Hike
A shaded canyon, a flowing creek and a waterfall at the end. Here is what to know before you hike Escondido Falls in Malibu.

What to expect on the trail
Escondido Falls sits in Escondido Canyon in Malibu, in the Santa Monica Mountains. The route starts on a quiet residential road, Winding Way, then turns onto a shaded canyon trail that follows Escondido Creek. Plan on about 3.5 miles round trip to the lower falls, with a gentle climb of a couple hundred feet and a few creek crossings. When the water is high you may need to hop across rocks, so wear shoes with good grip.
When to go
The falls look best after rain. Winter and early spring, Los Angeles' wet season, usually bring the most water, while dry months can leave only a trickle. Trails can be slick and muddy right after a storm, so check recent conditions before you go.
Our Waterfall Tour follows a clear weather policy: if it rains, we cancel and refund you, or you can choose a different experience.
What to bring
- Water and a small snack
- Closed-toe shoes with good grip, since the creek crossings can be wet
- Sun protection and a light layer
- A phone or camera, ideally with a charged battery
Getting there
The trailhead is off Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Parking near the trailhead is limited and paid, and overflow parking along the highway can be tight and uncomfortable to walk from. On a private tour the parking question disappears: we pick you up and drop you off.
Check conditions and closures
Trail rules, closures and creek conditions change from season to season. Check with the park managers before you head out. Our guides keep track of current conditions and plan your day around them.
